Marketing

How do I market my site? Do I need to worry about ranking high in search engines?

  • Create a billboard and/or static website…and make it dynamic. What? Read on….

  • Write good content and make the design simple and easy to read

  • Put your website on all marketing materials – this may seem obvious…but the obvious isn’t always…well  obvious.

  • Use your website to promote yourself locally-put your email address and phone number on every page. (be sure to ask your webmaster to "block" your email from being swept to reduce spam)

  • Keep the web content fresh and changing- a what’s new page is of no value when the last time it was new was 6 months ago. Try using a blog! There are many good ones that are free e.g. www.wordpress.org

  • Viral marketing is a way “savvy webmasters (and site owners) use email,  print advertising, and word-of-mouth to promote” their site.

  • Leave messages on online forums & bulletin boardsOnline message boards and bulletin boards are another good way to draw attention to your new site. Include your site URL in your signature line and user profile.” Netmechanic

  • “Submit Content to Free Article Websites -  .. Each article that gets submitted to a free article website requires that the free article website, … include a byline that has a link back to your website. This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to promote organic linking.” www.sitening.com

  •  Write articles for other newsletters - You can dramatically increase your visibility when you write articles in your area of expertise and distribute them to editors as free content for their e-mail newsletters or their websites.”  Webcredible website

  • Write articles for your site relevant to your business - “Expose your expertise! …By writing, you're creating unique content found nowhere else…It also gives you another way of explaining a product or service without coming off as a sales pitch.” Webcredible website

  • Have a free newsletter- A free newsletter users subscribe to “can serve as a link between you and your visitors, benefiting both parties, and drawing return visitors to your site. How to Start Your Own Newsletter-  http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/newsletter.shtml

  •  Issue News Releases. Find newsworthy events and send news releases to print and Web periodicals in your industry. The links to your site in online news databases may remain for years and have some clout with link popularity. There is a free way to do this…PR Web

  • Encourage repeat visitors Use some simple JavaScript code to encourage repeat visitors with a "Bookmark This Site!" icon on your page.

Am I discounting the use of search engines and saying they aren’t useful? Absolutely not! Generating interest in your site can happen in other creative ways. Web users that visit your site can come from  many different sources besides a search engine.
